What brake shoes do
In a drum brake, curved shoes sit inside the drum. When you brake, hydraulic pressure pushes the shoes outward against the drum's inner surface and friction slows the wheel. The same shoes also do the work of the parking brake on many vehicles.
Because shoes carry both service braking and parking duty, their friction formula matters. FTC shoes use asbestos-free compounds that are formulated and dyno tested, plus an application-specific parking-brake formula with higher friction characteristics.
